Stuart is a mentor, angel investor, professor and grape-grower.
His interests include financially sustainable high impact social enterprises, business strategy through design thinking, virtuous spiral entrepreneurial ecosystems, leveraging old industries with new technology and any “why did I not think of that” innovation that addresses a real user need.
He supports, advises and invests in for-profit and for-benefit enterprises in sectors ranging from web CRM to medical devices. At Stanford University’s Hasso Plattner Institute of Design (the d.school) he is a Consulting Associate Professor responsible for the business strategy track of the Design for Extreme Affordability course, as well as Director of the Social Entrepreneurship Lab.
Stuart owns and operates Papera Ranch, an old-vine Zinfandel vineyard in California’s Russian River Valley, from which a number of critically acclaimed wines are produced, all of which he is required to quality check on a regular basis.
Stuart’s previous career spanned a number of roles and geographies, from Data Communications Software Engineer to Director of International Technology across Europe and the U.S.
Building on a number of less than stellar startups, he became a 20-year overnight success, co-founding Gradient Solutions, an early pioneer in providing technology to connect travel e-commerce websites to legacy airline reservations systems for customers such as Austrian Airlines, Delta, KLM, Northwest Airlines, Thomas Cook and Virgin Travelstore. In August 2000, Gradient Solutions was acquired by Sabre, a Global Distribution System.
Stuart holds a B.A. (Mod.) in Computer Science from Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland, an MBA from the University of Geneva, Switzerland, and an Executive MBA from Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business, Pittsburgh, USA.
