Our project begins with our partner Bay Area shelter, where we carefully and compassionately assess the aptitude and interest of each survivor who has opted into our program. At our secure training space, we offer literacy, personal finance, and computer literacy training across the student population with the help of online tools, partnerships with organizations such as SamaSchool, and support from Stanford University. We then continue the training by assessing interested candidates in three different technology tracks; (1) IT support (quality assurance management, data cleanup, data entry), (2) web design, and (3) application programming. The curricula for these three tracks have been provided by our for-profit partners (one of which has successfully trained inmates at San Quentin to code). We then help survivors practice their skills on anti-trafficking technologies they design, supported by partnerships we have secured with California-based nonprofits that mentor underprivileged groups in coding. Proof-of-Concept in hand, we would seek funding to bring successful trainees from the pilot project into the organization as full time employees. These employees will be able to engage in contract software development OR teach new classes of survivors. AnnieCannons will manage sales and quality control and provide a workspace with the resources that women - especially women who have experienced severe trauma - need to succeed: on-site childcare, counseling, daytime nutrition, group-supported project structures, and on-demand workflow. Non-teacher graduates could join in such contract-based, on-demand work. Our contracting business would underprice US-based development competitors, but generate enough revenue to confer real economic power for our survivors in lower-income communities. If enough trainees choose to do contract work through AnnieCannons, a modest commission on hourly fees can support our operating costs and begin to fund expansion into less expensive markets where we have already established partnerships.
